| John: |
Come on Jim, you worked with him,
you’ve got to know what’s got people talking? |
| Jim: |
He was the best Guv I ever had.
He’s a brilliant officer and a good mate, he knows which team he’s on and
he’s not afraid to play hard ball, he’s impressive Old Bill so his reputation
precedes him. |
| John: |
Give me a break. |
| Jim: |
Jealous are you? |
| John: |
What of? |
| Jim: |
The fact that half the nick is talking
about him like he’s the best officer Sun Hill’s ever known. |
| John: |
The other half of the nick is saying
he’s the most bent cop Sun Hill’s ever had. |
| Jim: |
That’s rubbish Sarge, and if you’re
listening, you’re a fool. Frank Burnside’s the.. |
| John: |
I heard you the first time Jim.
He’s the best Guv’nor you ever had, walks on water, does the trick with
loaves and fishes... |
|
|
|

|
|
|
| John: |
So what do you think of Burnside?
(with sarcasm) I hear you two go back. |
| Jack: |
He’s a decent bloke and a good copper. |
| John: |
(rolls eyes and sighs) Yeah I’ve
heard the sermon from Jim, but I’ve also heard what the rest of the nick
is saying. They think he’s bent. If I’m going to work with him I want to
know what he’s about. |
| Jack: |
I know about the rumors - Bob Cryer’s
probably got a few of them to answer for. It’s because Frank was willing
to put his neck out to send down some bent coppers that his name got scorned.
You know better than to take their word for it, John. |
| John: |
Bob Cryer? I wouldn’t expect gossip
from him, there’s got to be something more to it. |
| Jack: |
Yeah, he’s like you. |
| John: |
(in amazement) What?! |
| Jack: |
Come on John, you’ve got a bit of
a reputation yourself. Frank’s got more of a rep because he’s been around
longer, he’s achieved more and he’s post-PACE. |
| John: |
(in a sarcastic tone) Thanks Guv! |
| Jack: |
You know there’s more to it than
that. Yes he’s got his own methods, but haven’t we all? Burnside is a good
officer because he cared about the job, he’s willing to put in the effort,
he knows what’s right and wrong, and he tries to do the right thing even
if that means the end justifies the means. Sound like anyone you know? |
| John: |
He still sounds dodgy to me. You’re
trying too hard - singing his praises. Something’s off key. |
| Jack: |
(sigh) You’ll understand when you’ve
worked with him. He’ll drive you crazy sometimes but God knows we all get
on each other's nerves sometimes. Give him a go John, he’s worth it. |
